Assistance from a home care provider can be the answer for a senior who wants to continue to live at home.  Let's face it- there is no substitute for your own home.

It is important to feel comfortable with the caregiver or companion who assists you, and choosing the right home care provider is a good place to begin.  Some seniors may be fortunate enough to enlist the aid of family members or friends, while others must depend on outside home care help.  If you need to find a home care provider, make a list of what you need help with and the type of home care services that would benefit you the most.

Once you identify your needs, you will need to decide whether to use an independent home care provider or an agency.  CareTrak Home Care recommends that you compile a list of questions to ask potential home care providers.  Do not be timid!  The following is a partial list of questions that may help you choose the right home care provider for you.

1. Is the home care provider licensed, insured and bonded?

2. Is the home care provider an independent, private caregiver or an agency?  If the caregiver is independent, can the individual provide evidence of satisfactory background checks, relevant work experience and credentials?

3.  If the home care provider is an agency, do they employ their staff or use contract help?  How does that affect you?  Are their caregivers and companions screened and reference and background checked?

4. Does the home care provider or agency provide the services you need?  Typical services should include: companionship, bathing, dressing and grooming assistance, homemaking, light housekeeping, errands and transportation services and medication reminders.

5. Are the caregivers experienced in home care services?

6. Do you pay the agency, the caregiver or both?

7. Is the caregiver or companion covered under Worker's Compensation if an accident occurs while working in your home?

8. Will I have to sign a long term contract?

9. What is the policy regarding canceling services?
