Stress Free Ways to Care For Elderly Parents

It is not uncommon to be a child who is caring for their elderly parents. In fact, twenty five percent of all Americans are caring for elderly relatives or family friends. This is a stressful occupation that can cause a great deal of stress to those caregivers. Unfortunately, they are not compensated nearly enough for taking care of them. This can put so much stress on a person that they forget to take care of themselves or their families. If you find you are feeling stressed out, you may want to hire a professional caregiver to help take care of the elder person you are responsible for. This is not always an option, but there are some things you can do to relieve the stress and make your life much less complicated.

1. Take Care of Yourself First - You need to get plenty of sleep and take some time to yourself. If you can not afford to hire someone, check with other family members and set up a schedule so you are all offering the elderly person care without compromising your own life. Your family needs you as much as the elderly person does and splitting time can offer you the time you need to de-stress. If there is no one to help, teach your spouse what needs to be done so they can give you at least a day off a week to take care of yourself.

2. Hire a Caregiver - Many people would rather not hire someone to do what they feel they are more capable of doing. If there are funds, it is best to hire someone to do this. You should still check on the elderly person regularly to make sure that their needs are met. Installing a nanny cam can give you piece of mind that the caregiver is following instructions when you are away too. These cameras are discreet and are also a good tool for when the elderly parent or friend is on their own.

3. Community Resources - You can go to your church or your local senior organization to see what they offer to help you with your aging parent or friend. There are many organizations that can bring them food for the day or even take them to social events if they are viable enough to leave the house. Church groups offer many senior activities that can help your aging parent feel less alone. These times you can dedicate to yourself.

These tips are things you need to do to make sure you are a good caregiver. If you do not take care of yourself, you are not going to be an effective caregiver. There are many online communities that offer resources and a shoulder to cry on and these should be taken advantage of too.
